Pleased to Meet You!
Hawaii, 1978
I treasure this photo of my mother and baby self. It captures a feeling that has stayed with me my whole life: the love of a mother and the tranquility of the beach. This is where my affection for the sea began. My mother Lula, a free spirit born and raised in Hawaii, traveled with my brother and I from Florida back to Hawaii every summer of our childhood. This sort of island life was a great privilege and a grand adventure every day. It instilled in me an appreciation for mother nature and a fondness for the ocean. My favorite treasures of childhood were the items we picked up on these adventures: sea shells, sea glass, loose feathers, driftwood... and I would see these shapes reflected on the textiles of my mothers closet: bohemian prints, traditional mumus, breezy kaftans, hand blocked Indian sundresses, vintage pieces that were timeless and romantic. In the modern fashion world these styles are challenging to come by yet are the perfect wardrobe for all aspects of island living and salty holidays. I hope you find a few treasures here to satisfy the island wanderlust in you!
Happy Travels,
Karly & Lula
